Aecon’s first Remote Training Centre in Neskantaga

Construction of Aecon’s first Remote Training Centre was completed in November 2013 and courses started in February 2014 with a Mining Essentials Training course. The grand opening celebration was held in August 2014 in Neskantaga Territory, Ontario.

The multi-purpose facility is outfitted with state of the art technology, including Cisco TelePresence, high-definition two-way video communication and collaboration technology, a 70-inch Smart Board,  a 70-inch LED HDTV, high-speed satellite broadband connectivity, as well as individual laptops. The centre directly connects to e-learning tools and programs to offer a wide variety of curriculum including access to secondary and post-secondary institutions, safety training courses, trades and technical certifications.

Aecon, in collaboration with the Matawa First Nations’ Kiikenomaga Kikenjigewen Employment and Training Services (KKETS), led the Remote Training Centre project team comprised of ATCO Structures & Logistics, Bell Canada, Cisco Canada, Galaxy Broadband Communications, Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario and Confederation College.

In July 2013, Aecon and KKETS entered into a strategic partnership, starting with a joint commitment to provide local access to community-based education, trades and apprenticeship training for Indigenous Peoples in northern and remote areas surrounding Ontario’s Ring of Fire mining development.
