Calgary South Health Campus - Calgary, AB

The Calgary Health Region’s South Health Campus is a 1.8 million SF facility on 44 acres of land. When complete, the hospital will house 293 beds, 30 emergency department treatment spaces and 11 operating rooms. Phase II will eventually expand the facility to 642 beds and 800,000 annual outpatient visits.

As the Mechanical Construction Manager on the project, Aecon (Lockerbie & Hole) is responsible for the installation of all project-related plumbing, heating and medical gas systems, including:

  • 40 air handling units, weighing a total of 2.8 million pounds
  • Heating plant housing 11 gas-fired hot water boilers capable of generating 190 million BTUs an hour
  • Four (4) low pressure steam boilers and three (3) high pressure steam boilers to supply steam for humidification and to sterilization equipment
  • Hot water heating and chilled water systems requiring 75 pumps and 18 heat exchangers
  • Five (5) 1,500-ton water-cooled chillers
  • 30 tank-less type heating units to supply domestic hot water

Aecon (Lockerbie & Hole) also holds project accountability in managing subcontractors for fire protection, pipe & duct insulations, sheet metal, refrigeration and building management system scopes of work.

Working closely with the construction management team, Aecon (Lockerbie & Hole) contributed input into the planning and scheduling phases of the overall project, allowing for efficient preplanning of work flow, anticipation of manpower requirements, scheduling material procurement and delivery requirements, pre-tendering of major equipment, and scheduling of subtrade requirements. Lockerbie & Hole, in partnership with subtrades and consultants, developed three dimensional drawings of the mechanical rooms. The model allowed for the creation of piping spool sheets, in turn allowing for pre-fabrication of the piping at our fabrication shop. The modeling eliminated any potential interference with the structure or the work of other trades and allowed us to review the layout of the mechanical rooms with the owner prior to fabrication.

The South Health Campus is working towards a Silver Certification in the LEED program.
