Lower Mattagami

In January 2010, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) awarded a $1.7 Billion design-build contract to the Kiewit Alarie Partnership (KAP), a joint venture between Aecon Group and Peter Kiewit and Sons. The contract is part of an overall $2.6 Billion OPG project scheduled for completion in 2015, at which time OPG will have enhanced its capacity to supply power to Ontario’s grid system with the addition of 438 megawatts of clean, renewable, electrical power – enough power for almost 500,000 homes. It is OPG’s largest hydroelectric project in Northern Ontario in 40 years.

The Kiewit Alarie Partnership (KAP) contract calls for the redevelopment and expansion of four hydroelectric generating stations on the Lower Mattagami River: Smoky Falls (located about 70 kms northeast of Kapuskasing), Little Long, Harmon and Kipling. Collectively, these stations currently provide almost 500 megawatts of hydroelectricity.

Three Aecon divisions are directly involved in the project: Leo Alarie & Sons Construction, headquartered in Timmins, is providing local knowledge and heavy construction expertise;  Aecon Group Quebec brings civil expertise gained through Quebec power projects; and Aecon Industrial is supporting pipe fabrication and mechanical services.
