Portlands Energy - Toronto, ON

The Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) is a natural gas-fired peaking station that produces power when demand is at its highest. Two gas-fired turbines produce the heat necessary to power the steam turbine which generates 550 MW of electricity, enough to provide power to 500,000 homes. PEC also has the capability to operate as a district heating plant, supplying steam and district heating for about three million square feet of either residential or commercial building space.

Aecon Constructors was awarded three (3) separate contracts totalling $60 Million to complete the Anchor Bolts Down civil components of the PEC project.

Aecon scope of work involved:

  • dredging the existing outlet channel for cooling water discharge
  • installation of 96” cooling water intake and discharge pipe through the site
  • construction of underground utilities and major foundations

As part of the major foundations, Aecon constructed an intake channel and pumphouse that included excavation to a 16m depth below lake level and placement of 3500 m3 of concrete.

Aecon initiated work in September 2006, with project completion posted in late August 2007.
