Moose Deer Point – Water Treatment Plant, Water Tower and Distribution

Business Unit: Aecon Mining
Client: Moose Dear Point First Nation
Value: $17 million
Location: MacTier, ON
Completion: 2010
Aboriginal Labour Force: 20%

This project consisted of constructing an 11L/S sand filter water treatment, an elevated composite water storage tank with 580-cubic metre capacity, more than 9,000LM of HDPE watermain (150mm to 300mm diameter) and 83 services, totalling approximately 3,000LM.

The water treatment plant also features a low lift pump station (9m deep) and an intake into Georgian Bay. The majority of all distribution piping was through rock. Running water was required to be moving through the plant for four months before the commissioning process could be initiated in order to develop the schumtzdeche on the sand filter. This required careful planning and co-ordination in order that all other facets of the building construction could proceed. The project reached substantial completion one month ahead of schedule.
