One of Ontario Power Generation’s largest infrastructure projects in the last 40 years, the Lower Mattagami River project was awarded to KAP (Kiewit Alarie Partnership) in 2009 and will take a projected six years to complete. Scope of work involves increasing the capacity of the four lower Mattagami Dams: Smoky Falls, Kipling, Little Long and Harmon. Capacity is set to increase from 480 MW to 930 MW. In order to facilitate the increased capacity, KAP is first constructing an entirely new Dam at Smoky Falls, and adding necessary infrastructure to install new generators at each of the other three dams. At 25% ownership, Indigenous Peoples serve as a major shareholder on this monumental project and constitutes approximately 20% of the employed labour force.
