Safety First

Sustainability and environmental consciousness are embedded in Aecon’s Corporate Culture and are also highly visible in our construction operations.

One place this commitment is reflected is at Aecon’s Industrial office in Cambridge, Ontario, where  Aecon developed, constructed and now operates a 250 kW rooftop solar installation on the roof of our Central Canada fabrication facility. The solar panels that were installed generate approximately 325,000 kWh of clean power a year, eliminating 65 metric tons of CO2 per year, which is the equivalent of powering 29 homes, taking 12 cars off the road, or planting 15 acres of forest.

In the short time since the solar industry launched in Ontario, Aecon has established itself as a leading player.  In February 2010, Aecon completed Ontario’s first 250 kW PV rooftop system for Towcon Holdings in Cambridge under Ontario’s Feed-in-Tariff program.  Aecon is now a leader in the installation of roof top solar systems for some of the largest solar developers in the sector, having completed projects for marquis clients such as IKEA, Home Depot, Canadian Tire and Guelph Hydro, among others.

Aecon is also well coordinated to develop ground mounted solar parks, both on a large and small scale.  Aecon completed the 10 MW Lily Lake Solar Park in Peterborough for Peterborough Utilities Corp., which officially opened on October 19, 2011.

Aecon has developed key relationships with manufacturers, suppliers and other companies along the solar value chain to deliver EPC solutions for roof top and ground mounted solar parks.

Developing and building renewable forms of energy such as solar power is an example of Aecon’s forward-looking mind-set, and testament to how the company always aims to safely, profitably and sustainably deliver the best in integrated services, products and solutions. Aecon’s vision for the future is rooted in sustainability and innovation, reflecting our mission to “build things that matter”.
