Evan Thomas Water & Wastewater Treatment Facility - Kananaskis, Alberta

The project is a design-build-finance-operate-maintain (“DBFOM”). EPCOR is the project lead, financier, and operator. The scope of this project includes upgrades to both the water and wastewater treatment plants, new potable water reservoirs at the Kananaskis Village, and the Nakiska Ski Resort and extensive distribution piping.

Aecon Water, with Stantec, designed and constructed the project; the scope included procurement, project management, scheduling, value engineering, innovative design, and liaising between key stakeholders.

A unique feature and one that required careful planning were the construction windows for each portion of the pipeline. To address the unique location and project agencies, EPCOR, Aecon Water and Stantec strategically planned the delivery approach to meet stakeholder expectations:

  • A portion of the project passes by a golf course, therefore work in this area had to be complete during the winter
  • The area adjacent to the campground also had to be completed during the winter while keeping 12 residents with water throughout the process
  • The portion feeding the Nakiska Ski Hill, along with a new reservoir had to be completed between May 1st and September 30th to ensure there was no disruption in service
  • The Delta Hotel required continued water and wastewater service because they have guests year round
