K+S Potash Legacy Mine

Aecon was awarded the first of a series of contracts for the Legacy Project that included early cavern development work, well pad construction, structural steel fabrication and erection, foundation construction and mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation work for the tank farm and the plant.

Over the course of the project, the value of Aecon’s work more than tripled as various contracts were awarded. The project built on the expertise Aecon has developed on previous potash projects in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.

The mine was designed to extract potash 1,500 metres below the surface using solution mining technology and started production in 2016. By the end of 2017, it had the capacity to extract two million tonnes per year. The Legacy mine is about 60 kilometres northwest of Regina – a development that was the first new potash mine in Saskatchewan in more than 40 years.
