Jul 3, 2008

Toronto, Ontario – July 3, 2008: Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE) announced today that a 50/50 joint venture consisting of Aecon Buildings and Caspian Projects Inc. of Winnipeg, Manitoba has secured a contract to design and build Canada Post’s new Winnipeg mail processing plant.

Under the contract, Aecon and Caspian will design and build a new LEED certified plant and administration complex totaling approximately 260,000 sq feet.

The Project will consist of a 200,000 sq foot plant, 20,000 sq foot mezzanine area and 40,000 sq foot administration facility, and will include 40 high dock loading bays.  It represents the largest investment Canada Post has made in a city’s postal operation in the last 20 years, and is the first step in the Corporation’s plans to invest as much as $1.9 billion over the next several years to modernize and revitalize its national postal network.

The new plant will be located at the Winnipeg International Airport and will be built to LEED specifications (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), reflecting the environmental sustainability of the design and construction methods used.  Construction is scheduled to begin in July, 2008, with completion slated for December, 2009.

Aecon and Caspian have worked together on previous projects in Manitoba, including the 2005 Canadian Design-Build Award winning 2PPCLI Garrison Facility in CFB Shilo, and the 17 Wing  Logistics Consolidation Buildings for the Department of National Defence in Winnipeg.
