Holdom Overpass Project Earns Prestigious Envision Platinum Award for Sustainable Infrastructure

Oct 29, 2026

Toronto, Ontario – October 27, 2026 – Aecon is proud to announce that the Holdom Overpass Project in Burnaby, British Columbia, has been recognized with an Envision Platinum™ Award by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (“ISI”).

The distinction is the highest-ranking award under the Envision sustainability framework and rating system, underscoring the commitment of the Aecon-Gateway Infrastructure Group General Partnership and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to delivering infrastructure that creates long-term environmental, social and economic value. Administered by ISI, Envision is a globally recognized framework used to evaluate infrastructure projects. Through an independent third-party verification process, projects are assessed across a broad range of criteria, including quality of life, environmental stewardship, climate resilience, resource efficiency and long-term community benefits.

“Receiving an Envision Platinum Award highlights the dedication of our team and partners and reinforces Aecon’s position at the forefront of implementing innovative and responsible construction solutions,” said Scott Marshall, Senior Vice President, Major Projects West, Aecon Group Inc. “This recognition reflects the outstanding work in setting a high standard for sustainable infrastructure delivery and creating lasting benefits for local communities.”

The new four-lane overpass will improve safety, accessibility and transportation efficiency while supporting trade capacity through the Port of Vancouver, Canada’s largest port. The project includes roadway improvements, a new pump station, replacement of an at-grade rail crossing with a multimodal transportation link, and habitat enhancements and restoration initiatives. New public gathering spaces featuring First Nation art are also being created.

The Platinum designation was supported by a range of sustainability initiatives, including recycling plastic construction waste through the Construction Plastics Initiative by Light House, implementing a project-wide sustainability management system, and adopting responsible procurement and performance-tracking practices. The project has also advanced circular economy objectives through waste diversion, recycled materials, and lower-emission construction practices.

Approximately 84% of the project's construction waste has been diverted from landfill, while emissions have been reduced through renewable diesel fuel (98% usage), hybrid power solutions and electric vehicles. Recycled materials account for 13% of purchased project goods, exceeding a 5% target, and the project’s Sustainable Procurement Policy achieved 100% supplier compliance.

“While the award recognizes achievements realized to date, we remain focused on maintaining these standards through project completion,” said Prabh K. Banga, Vice President, Sustainability, Aecon Group Inc. “At Aecon, we are committed to integrating sustainability into every stage of project delivery.”

The Envision Platinum designation for the Holdom Overpass Project builds on Aecon’s track record of delivering sustainable infrastructure. The project joins a growing portfolio of Aecon projects recognized under the Envision framework, including the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which achieved Envision Platinum certification in 2021, and York Region’s 2nd Concession Project, which earned Envision Bronze certification in 2022.

“The Envision Platinum award builds on our proven track record of delivering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure that supports Canada’s trade needs while creating lasting benefits for communities and the environment. The Holdom Overpass Project continues that legacy and reflects what’s possible through strong collaboration with First Nations, the City of Burnaby, CN, the Government of Canada, and our design-build contractor Aecon-Gateway Infrastructure Group General Partnership,” said Jennifer Natland, Vice President of Properties and Development, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is delivering the Holdom Overpass Project in partnership with the City of Burnaby and CN, with funding from the Government of Canada. To learn more about the Holdom Overpass Project, visit portvancouver.com/holdomoverpass.
